Course Description:  Stroke is the nation’s third-largest cause of death. Minimizing disability and death from stroke starting with dispatch, decisions on who to transport, and identifying patients with ischemic stroke are key factors to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of stroke care.

Acute Stroke Online provides training on the symptoms, diagnosis and management of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and complications of stroke. It provides a higher level of information and is geared more for the experienced provider, coveringtreatment from the field to the emergency department, as well as critical care and rehabilitation.

This course is ideal for in-hospital or out-of-hospital healthcare providers, but appropriate for any healthcare provider who wants to improve his/her knowledge of stroke treatment.

A: This AHA eLearning course was created to meet the high demand for stroke education due to JCAHO requirements to maintain stroke center certification. Acute Stroke Online provides training on the symptoms, diagnosis and management of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and complications of stroke.
Q: Who is the intended audience?
A: This course is designed for in-hospital and out-of-hospital personnel, and is particularly geared toward the experienced provider.

Q: How is this course different from the other AHA stroke courses on OnlineAHA.org?
A: The difference between Acute Stroke Online and Stroke Hospital-Based Care Online is in the content delivery and overall course objectives. Acute Stroke Online uses an information-based approach with static materials, while Stroke Hospital-Based Care Online uses case-based patient scenarios. Acute Stroke Online provides a higher level of information than Stroke Prehospital Care Online and is geared more for the experienced provider, covering treatment from the field to the emergency department, as well as critical care and rehabilitation. Acute Stroke Online provides extensive in-hospital information and is not specific just to EMS. Stroke Prehospital Care Online is case based, and more of an assessment course, teaching the impact of diagnostics.

Q: What is the course format?
A: This self-paced, interactive eLearning course requires participants to complete 11 checkpoint exercises with review questions before accessing the online course test to demonstrate cognitive knowledge.

Q: Does this course offer a certification or credential?
A: No. Successful completion of this course does not result in an AHA course completion card. However, a certificate of completion is available for students to print after they have successfully completed the course.

Q: Is a skills session required?

A: No.

Q: Are there continuing education credits available for this course?

A: No. Continuing education (CE/CME) credits are not available for this course.

Q: How long does this course take to complete?

A: Students generally require approximately 2 hours to complete Acute Stroke Online.

Q: Is this course available in other languages?

A: No. Acute Stroke Online is offered only in English.

Q: Can students log in and out of the course?
A: Yes. Students can login and logout as many times as they choose. To logout, students simply click the "Click here to logout" link located at the top of the page after login. When a student is ready to continue training, he/she can return to OnlineAHA.org and login with his/her registered email and password.

Q: Can course material be accessed after the online portion is completed?
A: After completion, students have 12 months from the day of activation to refer to the course material for review and knowledge updates.
